Mayor Mike Bloomberg, a strong supporter of same-sex marriage, decided not to take a position today on President Obama’s stance on marriage equality, which has made headlines this week.
But Bloomberg is still a big fan of gay marriage!
After a reporter from BuzzFeed asked the mayor — who was holding a press conference at (where else?) the set of Saturday Night Live — whether it’s time Obama openly supports same-sex marriage, Bloomberg said, “You have to ask the president. He’s gotta decide what he believes and what he wants to do.”
The mayor continued, “I don’t think there’s any question about what I think is right. I don’t think it’s the government’s business to tell people who they can marry or can’t marry, and the only member of my administration that is in the Obama administration [Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan] has come out and said he is in favor of letting people love who they want to love and live with whom they want to live and marry whomever they want to marry.”
The questions to Bloomberg come a day after reporters grilled White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on the Obama administration’s stance on gay marriage, given recent comments from Vice President Joe Biden clearly expressing support for same-sex weddings.
A Bloomberg endorsement is also something that may be of interest to presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Today, another reporter asked the mayor whether Obama’s stance on gay marriage might influence his ultimate endorsement.
“I think about abilities to run the country, and part of that is what you stand for in social values and what of these so-called social issues you favor, don’t favor, would change, would strengthen,” Bloomberg said, basically dodging the question. “I think that’s all part of…what that leader brings to the party, and that’s what the voters have to decide on and what I will decide on too.”
Bloomberg also said he’s not close to offering an endorsement yet: “We are so far away from the election.”
After another reporter asked Bloomberg whether he felt that the gay marriage discussion has become a distraction for Obama, the mayor said, “I’ve never had the conversation with him about gay marriage, so I really don’t know. You’ll have to ask him.”
