The trumpet and sax of the guitarist’s quintet add extra textures to an already rich sound. In the last four years Halvorsons’s trio has become known for its naturally kaleidoscopic feel, and the horns find a way to underscore the music’s yen for pliability. Freak-outs sprout from nowhere and balmy moments arise in surprising numbers, but each brings beauty to the table.
