The pianist’s hard bop roots always give his late-in-life reflections a little extra oomph, one thing that makes Kuhn so singular. That and his choice of colleagues: On the new Wisteria he connects with bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Joey Baron, a unique confluence that finds them waxing poetic one moment, bustling through changes the next. Each is done with a big dollop of grace.
