Guillermo Klein’s Los Guachos

The Argentine composer’s new Carrera walks on the eerie side, with the signature idiosyncrasies that mark his work—unexpected swirls, cracked cadences, lush voicings—all enhancing the forlorn ballads that dominate the disc. They’re gorgeous in the way that they use the leader’s wobbly vocals to help make their emotional impact. His squad is a brotherhood of old pals, and their fraternity pays off big onstage.
