Pizza Hut is taking on sub sandwiches with the launch of its new product, the P’Zolo. It’s a pizza sandwich that comes in three flavors: Meat Trio with Italian sausage, pepperoni, ham, and cheese; Italian Steak with marinated steak, roasted vegetables, and cheese; and Buffalo Chicken with white-meat chicken, buffalo seasoning, and cheese. Each P’Zolo is served with a choice of ranch or marinara dipping sauce.
The pizza chain store is marketing the P’Zolo as a sub. Kind of just looks like a oversized Hot Pocket to me.
It’s available nationwide in stores for $3 for one or $5 for two–a pricing formula that, according to the Huffington Post, is set to directly attack Subway.
But Pizza Hut will have a long way to go if it wants to make it into the sandwich market. From The New York Times: “Pizza Hut is the largest pizza chain, ahead of Domino’s, Little Caesars, and Papa John’s. But Subway is the largest sandwich chain–and No. 2 in fast food over all, behind only McDonald’s. That means it will require a big effort for the P’Zolo to dent Subway’s sales.”
