The Portland, Oregon–based brainchild of New Zealand-born Ruban Nielson, Unknown Mortal Orchestra live up to their name with a mysterious brand of intricately arranged psychedelic funk. The band’s self-titled 2011 debut met with plenty of critical acclaim, though few seem to have compared the album to the wonder from Down Under it most reminds me of: Since I Left You by Australia’s Avalanches. (If you haven’t spun that one lately, do it soon—you’re in for a treat.) Nielson and his bandmates hit Glasslands Gallery tonight, mere weeks after their appearance at the Great GoogaMooga in Prospect Park.
