In my column about theater last year, I bemoaned the fact that there have been jukebox musicals about everything except the one I want to see–Motown!
Berry Gordy Jr. is planning a show called Motown which will tell his story while sprinkling in the Motown hits of the day.
And I’m here to say that if it doesn’t include the following songs, I will get violent:
“Where Did Our Love Go?”
“In and Out of Love”
“I Was Made To Love Her”
“Signed, Sealed, Delivered”
“I Heard It Through The Grapevine” (also done brilliantly by Gladys Knight & the Pips)
“You’re All I Need To Get By” (with Tammi Terrell)
“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” (ditto)
“Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)”
“Ball of Confusion”
“What Becomes of the Broken Hearted?”
“You Beat Me To The Punch”
SMOKEY ROBINSON AND THE MIRACLES
“I Second That Emotion”
“The Tears of a Clown”
MARTHA AND THE VANDELLAS
“Dancing in the Street”
THE FOUR TOPS
“Baby I Need Your Loving”
“Reach Out I’ll Be There”
THE JACKSON FIVE
“I Want You Back”
“I’ll Be There”
Oh, hell, just use them all!
There’s not one bad song in the whole catalogue.
