Captain America and Iron Man Wed At NYC Comic Bookstore (Actually, Jason and Scott from Ohio)

It was a wedding for the books — comic books that is. Ohio couple Jason Welker and Scott Everhart married at Midtown Comics this morning.

The couple’s nuptials were a part of a contest put on by the comic bookstore chain, which offered fans the chance to get married alongside Marvel’s gay superhero Northstar.

The marriage between Northstar and his longtime partner Kyle is the first same-sex union in comic book history, and takes place in none other than New York City in Astonishing X-Men issue #51.
Out of fifty entries, the couple was chosen to exchange vows in the
downtown location of the comic bookstore chain. The two met on an online
dating site and went to a comic book convention on
one of their first dates. For these avid comic book readers, the opportunity to
get married alongside the first same sex superhero marriage in comic
book history
was once in a lifetime.

Welker and Everhart had to fly to New York City from their
hometown of Columbus, Ohio, where same sex marriage is not legal, to make the superhero wedding. They will have
a private ceremony for friends and family when they return.

So how did the newly wed couple feel about the whirlwind wedding?

“I’m
so happy,” said Jason. “If we had set a date and had to wait for it, I
would have eloped. I’m so excited to be married.” His husband Scott smiled
adoringly as Jason expressed his excitement.

Following their wedding ceremony the comic bookstore will open to the general public where fans of the Astonishing X-Men series can take photos with newlyweds, and purchase issue #51 which is out on stands today. There will also be a superhero themed private reception hosted at a nearby hotel.
