A couple of weeks ago, rocker Steve Earle participated in a concert in Los Angeles protesting the erection of a new Walmart. Tonight he celebrates what would have been the 100th birthday of another populace-minded rabble-rouser: folk legend Woody Guthrie, he who once scrawled on his acoustic guitar, “This Machine Kills Fascists.” Joining him tonight for the first of three evenings of Woodyfest is John Hammond, Tim Robbins, and more. The next few nights feature guests ranging from Allen Toussaint to Billy Bragg and from Rachael Yamagata to Joe Purdy. No fascists allowed.
