Does Sex Lead to Love?

Bow chicka wow wowzer: a new study suggests that sex can lead to love.

Yes, you read that correctly.

As Jezebel’s insightful Lindy West explains, researchers mapped the parts of the brain “stimulated by feelings of love and by feelings of sexual arousal.”

What they found?

As per MSNBC: “What they discovered was a bit surprising — love and sexual desire both activate the striatum, showing a continuum from sexual desire to love. Each feeling impacts a different area of the striatum.”

“Sexual desire activates the ventral striatum, the brain’s reward system. When someone enjoys a great dessert or an orgasm, it’s the ventral striatum that flickers with life. Love sparks activity in the dorsal striatum, which is associated with drug addiction…

But it doesn’t stop there. The researchers also saw an overlap between sexual desire and love in the insula…

The[se] areas of overlap indicate that sexual desire transitions into love in many cases, and the feelings aren’t separate.”

Now, this news jibes with additional research the Voice has reported recently, which has turned old school notions of sex, love, dating, etc., upside down.

As our discussion with sexologist Dr. Justin R. Garcia suggested, people increasingly engage in one night stands to find love or land relationships.

And let’s not forget that Jessica Massa and Rebecca Wiegand’s work indicates that traditional notions of courtship are dying.

So there you have it, ladies and gents: Science says that sex can kickstart your heart into something long-lasting and meaningful — if that’s what you’re going for, of course.
