In their new book, Leaping Tall Buildings, photographer Seth Kushner and writer Christopher Irving profile prominent creators of comic books. Tonight, they interview them live at the Housing Works Bookstore Café, as they join legendary Batman and Green Lantern/Green Arrow creators Denny O’Neil and Neal Adams for a conversation about social relevancy in comics. The duo’s ’70s-era collaboration, marked by O’Neil’s earnest scripts and Adams’s photorealistic art, presented a sharp turn from comics’ traditional escapist fare. They spearheaded the movement to infuse superhero comics with greater real-world meaning while exploring pollution, drug abuse, discrimination, and other evils that had previously escaped comics’ sight.
