John McCain Understands Nothing Says ‘I’m in the Muslim Brotherhood!’ Like Marrying a Jew

If you are one of those Democrats or Republicans who, regardless of party, actually liked John McCain once upon a time, and who found that — until he picked Sarah Palin as his running mate — he was the kind of fellow inclined to put country before party on important matters, take note.

That John McCain came back yesterday.

McCain came to the aid of Huma Abedin, a New Yorker and long-time aide to Senator and then Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. Michelle Bachmann has been investigating if there has been an infiltration of the United States government because people like Abedin, Bachmann asserts incredulously, are really moles for the Muslim Brotherhood and are trying to influence policy in their favor.

In one sense, this is laughable. Nothing says, “I’m in the Muslim Brotherhood and I’m a radical Islamist hell bent on destroying the United States!” quite like marrying a Jew. And Abedin is married to a rather well known Jewish politician who, though perhaps better known for a slight implosion he had last year, is also quite the hawk for Israel.

In another sense, this is no laughing matter. Bachmann may be a clown, but she is one with access to the levers of power in the United States government, and she’s using them to engage in a McCarthy-like witch-hunt against Muslim Americans. Democratic Representative Keith Ellison, Bachmann’s colleague from Minnesota and the sole Muslim member of Congress, debunked her and her tactics strongly. But something this serious really needed an elder statesman from Bachmann’s own party to shut this shit down.

Enter John McCain.

McCain addressed the floor of the Senate in the above video, and said in his speech, “These sinister accusations rest solely on a few unspecified and unsubstantiated associations of members of Huma’s family, none of which have been shown to harm or threaten the United States in any way. These attacks have no logic, no basis, and no merit and they need to stop. They need to stop now.”

This time, the Mac really is back.
