The British DJ-producer Will “Quantic” Holland moved to Cali, Colombia, in 2007. Since then, he has anthologized Colombian music’s illustrious past on The Original Sound of Cumbia, formed cumbia cover band Los Miticos del Ritmo, and most recently, teamed up with Mario Galeano of Frente Cumbiero for the mightiest (double) album of Colombian music in ages. Part Buena Vista Social Club, part cumbia futurism, Ondatrópica (Soundway) mixes cumbia and salsa journeymen and their younger counterparts. Quantic (accordion), Galeano (bass), Alfredito Linares (piano), Grupo Niche co-founder Wilson Viveros (timbales), and Jorge Gavira (trumpet) will be among the dozen tropical titans onstage when Los Irreales de Ondatrópica make their U.S. debut. Ozomatli’s Wil-Dog Abers, performing as “El Gavachillo,” kicks things off with his new group Banda Viento de Oro, a punky take on horn-driven Mexican banda.
