Hey, Ladies: Religious Groups Still Want To Control Your Vagina (And In Other News, Grass Is Green)

Talk about timing!

Shortly after Centers for Disease Control stats indicated that 37 percent of U.S. births are unintended, a Conservative Christian group is trying to block the White House Policy which makes insurers cover birth control, set to go into effect Aug. 1.

Politico has the story: apparently, the Thomas More Law Center has filed an “emergency motion asking Federal District Judge Robert Cleland of the Eastern District of Michigan to stop the new requirement.”

The Center has filed the motion for Legatus — that’s a major Catholic business organization started by Tom Monaghan, the dude who used to own Domino’s Pizza.

Anyway, the Center is in a tizzy because exemptions to the mandate — which include religious institutions — do not apply to businesses.

So, the argument goes, the mandate violates the religious freedom of business owners whose faith does not support contraception.

There are several lawsuits involving Obama’s decision across the country, but only a handful deal directly with employers.

However, Politico notes, a Colorado judge is expect to decide on one such case as early as tomorrow.

As we’ve noted, this is hardly the first time that religious folk have protested the rule: Some American Protestants are flipping as much of a shit as Catholics.

We’ll keep you posted with any new developments.

But if you want a refresher on Obama’s health policies in the meanwhile — and specifically what it means for womenfolk — read this.
