Boqueria will be offering a market-driven tomato dishes and cocktail menu throughout August. The tomato frenzy is in honor of Spain’s La Tomatina Festival, which kicks off this month in Buñol, Valencia.
A little background on La Tomatina. It’s known across Spain as the great “Tomato Battle” where thousands of festival-goers partake in one of the world’s largest food fights by hurtling thousands of pounds of tomatoes at each other.
While guests at Boqueria will not end up covered in tomatoes, Barcelona-born and bred chef Marc Vidal will prepare a rotating selection of dishes that feature summer’s freshest tomatoes at the peak of harvest to celebrate the festival.
Here are some of the dishes:
Ensalada de Tomate – heirloom tomato and corn salad with watermelon, mita de crema, croutons, and basil oil.
Ensalada de Tomate y Anchoas – heirloom tomatoes, salt cured anchovies, purple basil, fresh ricotta cheese, pedro ximénez, and black olive salt.
Montado de Mejillones en Escabeche – montado of pickled mussels and tomato marmalade
Pulpo con Mojo y Setas – grilled octopus, tomato, thyme, mojo rojo, mushrooms, and citrus allioli.
The cocktails will also be tomato centric. A list of some of the offerings: Banderilla Maria, Spicy Guindilla Bloody Mary Mix, Tito’s Vodka, and a Sparkling Tomatina Sangria.
