Katz’s Delicatessen Has Been Gendered: The “Manliest” Sandwich Shop in America?

The Men’s Health Guy Gourmet blog has announced the nine finalists in its 2012 annual “Manliest Restaurants in America competition.” Among the finalists was New York’s own Katz’s Delicatessen, which won the nomination for the manliest sandwich shop in the States.

From the blog: “Call Katz’s a tourist trap, and you’re missing the point: Katz’s ordering process sucks for tourists. You wait in line until the bouncer hands you a ticket. If you lose it, they’ll charge you a minimum of 50 bucks. Then the various countermen serving sandwiches, drinks, and dogs tally up your total. At the end a cashier rings up your total bill. Confused? Shut up and eat your food.”

Here’s the list of the finalists:

Manliest BBQ Joint: Oklahoma Joe’s, Kansas City, KS
Manliest Pizza Parlor: Burt’s Place, Chicago, IL
Manliest Steakhouse: Cattleman’s Steakhouse, Fabens, TX
Manliest Seafood Shack: Mabel’s Lobster Claw Restaurant, Kennebunkport, ME
Manliest Brew Pub: Snake River Brewing, Jackson Hole, WY
Manliest Sandwich Shop: Katz’s Delicatessen, New York, NY
Manliest Taco Stand: Hankook Taqueria, Atlanta, GA
Manliest Burger Shop: Butcher & The Burger, Chicago, IL
Manliest Adventurous Eating: Incanto, San Francisco, CA

The winner of the competition — the Manliest Restaurant in America — will be revealed in the December 2012 issue of Men’s Health.
