Like a lost Terry Gilliam segment of Heavy Metal, René Laloux’s 1973 film, Fantastic Planet, engulfs the viewer with scene after scene of unnerving SF wonder. Terr, a young Om (a human, a homophone for the French homme) becomes the pet (complete with obedience collar!) of a Draag child, part of the gigantic dominant species on the titular planet. When Terr escapes, he hooks up with a band of Om resistance fighters, and war ensues. The real draw is production designer Roland Topor’s bizarre creature design and strange, shell-like technology, made even stranger by the difference in size between the warring races.
