Wellness in Schools, a program that recruited culinary professionals to cook in New York City schools, has been discontinued because it does not meet new federal nutritional standards.
In the past four years, the program has gathered chefs including Eddie Huang from Baohaus, Michael Anthony from Gramercy Tavern, and Zak Pelaccio from Fatty Crab. They have helped design menus, conduct cooking demonstrations, and talk about nutrition in New York City’s schools.
The New York Times reports that the program, which was part of Michelle Obama’s Chefs Move to Schools initiative, does not comply with the requirements of the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act.
The news has been countered with those who believe the that the group has always maintained higher nutritional standards than those required by law.
“It’s a very obvious thing how much healthier these are, the recipes made from scratch as opposed to prepackaged food,” Sharon Richter, a licensed nutritionist who has worked with the organization told the Times.
