Panera Bread’s CEO Has Intense Workout Routine


If the CEO of a million-dollar bakery business can find the time to exercise and lose weight while constantly having to think, talk, and breathe food, anyone can.

The Wall Street Journal has an article out featuring Panera Bread CEO Ron Shaich. It’s tough running a restaurant chain with more than 1,000 bakery-cafés, and it sounds like it’s even tougher fitting a workout into the schedule.

But ever since Shaich signed on with a trainer, he has built muscle and lost 10 pounds. According to the article, Shaich meets up with his trainer at 5:30 a.m., two to three times a week.

His weekday workouts are usually an hour, and those on Sundays run 90 minutes. They start off with cardiovascular routines, hurdles designed to stretch while keeping the heart rate up, then abdominal exercises on a mat or with a weighted ball.

The workout usually ends with strength training or weights.

It might have paid off for Shaich, but the price tag is hefty. Shaich’s trainer gets $70 an hour or $750 to $1,000 a month. His basement home gym includes an elliptical machine, treadmill, and weights, which cost an estimate of $25,000.
