The ballots have been cast, and the finalists of the eighth annual Vendy Awards have been chosen from the more than 10,000 street vendors in town. Now the lucky few bring their popular dishes to Governors Island to compete for the coveted Vendy Cup. A panel of judges (including chef Eddie Huang and the guys of Das Racist) decides the grand-prize winner. But be sure to sample everything because you’ll have to vote for the People’s Taste Award as well as a winner of the best dessert competition, rookie vendor of the year, and market vendor of the year (a new title given to those who sell traditional street food at markets, such as Smorgasburg and the Hester Street Fair). The finalists include Piaztlan Authentic Mexican Food, Xin Jiang Prosperity Kebabs, Imperial Woodpecker Sno-Balls, and Melt Bakery. Proceeds from ticket sales go to the Street Vendor Project, a membership-based nonprofit organization that fights for vendors’ rights.
