JK Rowling’s first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy, is like a chamber of secrets unleashed in a goblet of fire.
It’s outrageous and dark and shocking and filthy and I’m loving hearing about it!
“One teenager cuts herself to relieve her misery, another commits suicide.
“Online pornography is described in gynecological detail.
“It feels like the author has unleashed all the swearing, sex, and vitriol that have been off limits to her since Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was published in 1997.”
Rowling even drops the f-bomb. (No, not Filius Flitwick.)
And not a moment too soon.
If I had to read subtext into a sword of Gryffindor one more time, I would have gone daft.
