Much like Rogue’s beer made from a brewmaster’s beard-cultivated yeast, this weird, ballsy brew started out as a joke. Then it got out of hand.
Colorado-based Wynkoop Brewery first imagined Rocky Mountain Oyster Beer as an April Fool’s joke: A video of the brewers discussing their love for their state’s “unique culinary jewel,” and their commitment to working with local flavors at the brewery. “When making this style of beer, it’s important to use the freshest ingredients possible,” says one mock-earnest guy, dumping a bagful of balls into the kettle, “And these testicles, they’re very fresh.”
Indeed, the video is hilarious:
But after the spoof, Wynkoop heard back from so many sample-seeking writers and curious patrons that they decided to go ahead and make an eight-barrel batch with 25 pounds of bull testicles, roasted, sliced, and added to the mash. The brewery describes it as an “assertive foreign-style stout, slightly viscous, with a deep brown color.”
RMOB is not being sold retail at the moment, so for a taste get yourself to Wynkoop’s tasting room (or to their booth at the Great American Beer Festival).
