There’s good news and bad news.
The bad news: There’s a new video showing two NYPD officers beating the crap out of a defenseless, unarmed man at a synagogue and outreach center for troubled youth in Crown Heights.
The good news: At least they didn’t shoot him.
The video — first posted on the web by crownheights.info, a Jewish news service that covers Jewish news in Brooklyn — shows the victim getting woken up by officers as he slept on a couch in a recreation room at the Aliya (Alternative Learning Institute for Young Adults) center.
What happens next is disturbing. See for yourself below.
The cops apparently thought the young man was trespassing. When he told them that he wasn’t — and offered to prove it — the cops tried to arrest him.
As you can see in the video, he briefly resists — putting his hands behind his back as he continues to tell the cops that he had permission to be there.
The cops, apparently, didn’t want to hear it. So they beat the shit out of him — punching him, hitting him with a truncheon, and even pepper-spraying him — for more than two minutes.
Adding insult to what we can only assume is substantial injury, the victim, Ehud Halevi, was hit with a felony charge of assaulting a police officer, as well as four misdemeanor charges and four violations, including trespassing, resisting arrest and harassment.
The kicker: he was allowed to be there — sources confirm that Halevi had the center’s permission to sleep on the couch. They say he’s been staying at the center for about a month — without incident — and it’s unclear why the cops were even there.
We reached out to Halevi. We’ll let you know if we hear back.
