The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office announced yesterday that it has dropped charges of assaulting a police officer — and other less-serious offenses — against a Crown Heights man who earlier this month got the crap kicked out of him by a police officer for no apparent reason.
The D.A.’s Office tells the Voice that it’s yet to make a decision about whether to charge the officer.
Thankfully, there is video of the incident, in which the officer is clearly seen assaulting the man, Ehud Halevy, in a two-minute-long beat-down — during which Halevy was punched in the head, pepper-sprayed, and beaten with a club.
As we’ve mentioned in prior posts, Halevy’s only crime was sleeping in a synagogue and outreach center for troubled youth in Crown Heights. He had permission to be there, and had been staying there for about a month.
As Assemblyman Dov Hikind, an Orthodox Jew who represents Brooklyn, says, “If not for the clear evidence of this video, we might believe that Mr. Halevi had committed the crime he was accused of, which included assaulting an officer of the law. But the video proves this was a lie. How many similar claims by law enforcement officers are equally fictitious?”
It seems fairly obvious in the video embedded above that Halevy was flat-out assaulted — by an officer of the law. And just because he’s a cop, the officer doesn’t have the right to kick the shit out of anyone he wants.
