The Polls have Started Closing. Here are the States that Matter.

At 7 p.m., six Eastern states closed their polls: Virginia, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Vermont. Now comes the fun.

With most states already locked up for either President Barack Obama or Mitt Romney there are generally thought to be nine major battleground states: Nevada, Iowa, Wisconsin, Colorado, New Hampshire, Ohio, North Carolina, Florida and Virginia. Virginia, the first swing state to close its poll, is also one of the most important. Romney’s held the lead in recent months, but a relatively late Obama surge has shown the incumbent with a narrow lead in the latest polls taken before the election.
Virginia is a crucial state for both parties because it’s worth 13 electoral votes of the 270 needed to win the presidency, and pundits everywhere predict that if Romney loses the state, it will be a mortal blow to his presidential chances. Virginia will likely be the first swing state called for a candidate. Check back with Runnin’ Scared for all your presidential election updates.
