In the months since Hurricane Sandy left some New York-area communities in a state of panic and disaster, no neighborhood has stepped up in a more inspiring and positive way than Red Hook.
Today All Hands on Deck, a cookbook containing 25 recipes from Red Hook’s restaurants, bars, bakeries, and supper clubs, is available online for $15. All proceeds from the book’s sales will directly benefit Restore Red Hook, a group founded by small business owners in the wake of the Hurricane.
The book was organized by Zac and Cat Overman, a couple who got married in Red Hook a short time before the storm hit, and were on their honeymoon during the disaster. Upon returning home, the Fort Defiance bartender and designer (Zac) and editor (Cat) have been working with their team of volunteers to help the businesses in their community get back on their feet. Fork’s own Tejal Rao, a resident of the neighborhood, wrote the book’s foreword.
Readers can expect homey recipes from The Red Hook Lobster Pound, the Good Fork, and Baked, among others.
Even better? If you buy the book today, you’ll be entered to win a $20 “junk bond” — i.e. drink ticket — to Fort Defiance. You can get All Hands on Deck here.
