Part Rififi, part War Games, Sneakers follows a group of heist specialists and computer whizzes—played by a murderer’s row that includes Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, David Strathairn, River Phoenix, and Mary McDonnell—as they work to steal a black box that could decrypt every computer system in the U.S., if not the world. Director Phil Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams) delivers a prescient, endlessly re-watchable movie about the chase for a high-tech MacGuffin in the age of cradle modems. In honor of the film’s 20th anniversary, Robinson will appear for a Q&A after tonight’s screening at 92Y Tribeca.
