Rub BBQ on 23rd Street shut its doors after eight years. Dec. 31 was its last day and owner Andrew Fischel posted on Facebook, “The universe has spoken and we must abide.” This is after the restaurant survived Hurricane Sandy and a stolen Hummer that crashed into its facade. 208 W. 23rd St.

Hester Street lost a brunch spot in the new year. Brown Cafe closed earlier this week. Bowery Boogie reported a typed note on the closed gate that said the owners were closing Brown to “focus on other nonprofit endeavors” but apparently Brown is still open for “private books and events.” 61 Hester St.

Suzie’s Chinese restaurant on Bleecker Street closed after serving the West Village for almost 40 years. NYU students waxed poetic about the take-out spot and eulogized Suzie’s “Americanized Chinese fair.” 163 Bleecker St.
