Bakeries-cum-cafes have become a New York staple in recent years. Forget about Belgian chain Le Pain Quotidien. Spots like Runner & Stone, and Bien Cuit have been leading the pack with zucchini sandwiches and plates of duck pastrami. The trend continues as Bien Cuit readies to open a pop up in Williamsburg and Israeli baker extraordinaire Uri Scheft’s Breads Bakery opens on Wednesday in Union Square.
Gowanus bakery Bien Cuit opened its second location in the West Village in December. In another swift move, the home of the Sicilian Breakfast Pizza will serve its goods pop-up style near the L train in Williamsburg. Grub Street reports that the pop-up will run on Friday afternoons through the weekend, and will only sell the bakery’s breads. 439 Metropolitan Ave.
Israeli baker Uri Scheft is a legend in Tel Aviv and will open his first American storefront on Wednesday at 7 a.m. in Union Square. Breads Bakery will feature babka, cheese sticks, and rugelach, plus a deli with sandwiches, soups and coffee. Scheft posted an ad on Craigslist looking for bakers saying,”At ‘Breads’ Bakery, our number one ingredient is our people.” 18 E. 16th St.
