The Cuban pianist’s beguiling Continuum was one of jazz’s signal achievements of 2012, and lots of year-end lists took note. Its trio-plus-percussionist design doesn’t really explain the way it connects the dots between yesterday and tomorrow, an idiosyncratic strategy that gives the bandleader plenty of leeway when it comes to dodging definitions. It’s also an album that unfolds in a poetic sense, spilling as much science on its 20th spin as it does on its fifth. This will be fun.
