Michael Dease

The chops-heavy trombonist is a master of glide. His mainstream swing often impresses with the graceful way it invites lyricism to the fore. If this approach sometimes seems a tad too polite, it’s wise to remember the attractions of tone and texture are occasionally undervalued in some circles. For this date, Dease brings a handful of provocateurs to the stand. David Berkman, Linda Oh, and Ralph Bowen don’t mess around when it comes time to make things happen. MACNIE
