Earlier this week, we told you about New York magazine’s cover story on Christine Quinn, in which writer Jonathan Van Meter reported that Mayor Bloomberg said, “Look at the ass on her,” while admiring a party guest.
But now, the mayor denies that he said anything of the sort. The Observer reports that, when asked about the off-color comment, Bloomberg stated, “I never said it, and I don’t know where it came from.” He also told a reporter, “That’s an outrage for you to say,” when asked if this was just another incident in his long history of sexist comments.
He did not, however, retract his compliment to Joe Biden’s balls, which he commended for their sturdiness and duality.
So what gives? Is Van Meter making things up? Does Bloomberg make so many of these comments that he can’t remember them all? Maybe it’s all just a simple misunderstanding. Perhaps Van Meter just didn’t hear the mayor properly, and he was actually saying:
“Look at the ass o’er here,” referring to his own rear end.
or
“That was a crass bonjour,” in reference to the rude Frenchman also in attendance.
or
“List of the ash is there,” directing an aide to his new anti-smoking campaign notes.
or
“Love to fish bass, for sure,” to someone who asked what he wanted for Christmas.
or
“Cooks make a fast hors d’oeuvre,” while complimenting the party host.
or
“Astonish her,” in hopes the reporter was actually a magician.
or
“Imagine Lance Bass fully bare,” rhapsodizing about his favorite ‘N Sync member.
We’re not sure, but we’ll let you know when we get to the bottom of this verbal fumble.
