Drinks: Dutch Kills
Downing cocktails at one of Sasha Petraske‘s bars can put a nice-sized hole in your wallet, but at his Queens outpost, all drinks are $11 to $8 if you show up during happy hour, which is 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and all night on Monday. Dip into one of the dark wood-paneled booths to enjoy a drink from the seasonal menu. Right now, hot cocktails rule, like a steamy “A La Mode” made from bourbon, cream, and mulled cider, or a classic hot buttered rum. Or just tell the bartender what flavors and spirits you like and he’ll mix you something off the menu. 27-24 Jackson Ave., Queens
Dinner: The Queens Kickshaw
In honor of NYC Beer Week, Queens Kickshaw, known for its “fancy” grilled cheese sandwiches, will feature Queens breweries until Friday. Bridge and Tunnel Brewery, Rockaway Brewing Co., SingleCut Beersmiths, and the rest of their 60-plus beers will be available to mix and match with hearty country dishes. All the cheesy sandwiches are built with Balthazar Bakery bread. A classic cheddar-and-mozzarella is paired with tomato soup for $8, while the manchego-and-ricotta melts over capers and minced eggplant for $9. Share a basket of flaky knishes ($7) or miso-mustard pickles ($5), and wash them down with a bottle of Beyond Kombucha — the flavored fermented tea is brewed in Astoria. 40-17 Broadway, Queens
Dessert: Cronin and Phelan’s
Bordering Astoria, this small Irish pub is more well-known for its cheap pints, and the friendly bartenders who remember your name, than its sweets. But a small dessert list entices drunk regulars and wandering Manhattanites. A slice of homemade strawberry-rhubarb pie costs $4.50, is served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and could easily be served at a family picnic instead of in a bar — the crust is flaky and whole pieces of strawberry spill out the sides.
