Kinky Boots is the latest Broadway tuner about shoes. One of the main stars of the show happens to be a very tall, red, shiny boot that actually gets entrance applause. In fact, it’s become so popular it will probably now get invited to all sorts of red carpet events and ribbon-cutting ceremonies and will surely be profiled in the tabloids. It might even get sued.
But it’s not the first footwear to star on Broadway. It’s not even the first red shoe! There was The Red Shoes, the ill-fated 1993 ballet musical based on the gorgeous movie that was much more footloose (and a way more effective melodrama).
And Into The Woods was the fairy tale reworking that included a witty take on Cinderella’s slippers and the wonderful way they fit. And now, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella involves the very same slippers, if not exactly the same plotline.
But wait, there’s been more. Dorothy couldn’t ease on down the road in The Wiz unless she was searching for her own (ruby red) slippers to ease on down some other roads with. And there have been lots of musicals about sneakers, though I don’t think they got entrance applause.
So there have been plenty of happy, well-clad feet on Broadway through the years. And with The Trip To Bountiful, we now have lots of Horton Foote too!
