On the edges of Gilbert Hernandez’s Love and Rockets work, neighborhood kids tease each other, find trouble, and comment on the adult action. But kids are at the heart of Marble Season, as Hernandez considers the pop culture he gleefully absorbed when growing up: the comics he read, the Captain America plays he staged in his backyard (complete with painted Frisbee shield!), and his obsession with Mars Attacks cards. At tonight’s book launch at Housing Works Bookstore Café, Hernandez hosts a slideshow of his comic inspirations, the first steps on a journey leading to Palomar and beyond.
