The past year has been a big one for Lena Dunham, to say the least. Her HBO series became the most talked-about show on television, and the 26-year-old renaissance woman (or girl) quickly became a “voice of her generation,” as her alter ego Hannah Horvath would put it. She won two Golden Globes. She landed a $3.7 million book deal with Random House. And now she’s likely to win the crown prize of the Internet kingdom: a Webby.
Nominees were announced this week for the 17th annual Webby Awards (think of it as the Oscars of all things online, from websites and online videos to social media, apps, and Internet advertising). Eleven hundred applications were narrowed down to only five per category, and Dunham wasn’t just nominated once. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she’s up for two awards: Best Individual Performance for her Obama for America “First Time” campaign video, as well as a shout out in the Social Content and Marketing category with HBO for her brainchild Girls.
After the major hype generated by her Obama ad, which sought to amp up the youth vote by comparing voting for the first time to having sex for the first time, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if Dunham won. However, she’s facing some tough competition. Her ad is up against projects featuring Jerry Seinfeld (“Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”), Charlize Theron (“Charlize Theron Gets Hacked”), and Ken Marino (Burning Love).
The awards will take place here in New York on May 21 (host and venue TBA) and will be broadcast the next day on the Webby website. Considering Dunham’s propensity to do crazy things during awards shows, the audience might be in for a hilarious treat if she wins.
