STAY GOLDEN

by

Last June, Brooklyn’s 18-year-old rapper Joey Bada$$ had listeners pinching themselves when his 1999 mixtape celebrated—and gloriously aped—the sound of its titular year, one that marks the heart of rap’s fifth (or is it sixth?) golden age. Tonight, he and his Pro Era clique return home after finishing up the Northeast leg of their 29-city Beast Coast tour, which unites them with Flatbush Zombies, who first turned heads with their hallucinogenic “Thug Waffle” video, and the Underachievers, whom Flying Lotus recently signed to his Brainfeeder label. Expect fast raps and heady beats, and don’t be surprised if people someday start referring to the period as golden age No. 9.
