YOUNG LOVE

In Patti Smith’s National Book Award–winning memoir, Just Kids, the singer-songwriter wrote about her time living with Robert Mapplethorpe in Clinton Hill, where the two young bohemians experimented with various forms of artistic expression. Photographer Lloyd Ziff, a Pratt student along with Mapplethorpe, captured the first glimpses of that magical period from 1968 to 1969: “They were both very young, and I found them very beautiful. I asked to come over to their place one day to shoot portraits of them. They were among the first double portraits I shot.” This exhibit brings together several black-and-white images of the couple that are the very first portraits ever taken of Smith and Mapplethorpe as well as a series of nudes.
