Only 4% of World’s Best Kitchens Are Run by Women?

Restaurant magazine’s annual ranking of “The World’s 50 Best Restaurants” was announced yesterday afternoon and it includes four New York spots in the top 50: Eleven Madison Park (5), Per Se (11), Le Bernardin (19), and Daniel (29). Joan and Jordi Roca of El Celler de Can Roca took home the number one spot this year.

You can see flashy photographs of the winners here, where you’ll probably notice the list recognizes just two women in the top 50: Elena Arzak Espina of Arzak in San Sebastián (8) — who won the magazine’s “best female chef” award last year — and Helena Rizzo of Mani (46) in São Paulo, who shares the spot with her husband Daniel Redondo. For a list that’s meant to represent the international restaurant scene, that number seems distressingly low.
