Once Les Miserables made tons of money, it was inevitable that the floodgates would be open for the filming of every musical ever made. (Can’t wait to see movies of Carrie, Scandalous, and Nick and Nora. Kidding.)
And so, Rob Marshall is directing a film of Sondheim’s Into the Woods, and they’re getting some very choice people to play the fractured fairy tale characters.
Meryl Streep is in talks to play the witch. (This continues her streak as the queen of the Broadway adaptations, after Plenty, Dancing at Lughnasa, Doubt, Mamma Mia, and the upcoming August: Osage County. She’s the ultimate Broadway queen.)
Johnny Depp has played every form of human known to creation, so to stretch even further, he’s going to be the Wolf.
And reportedly, James Corden is in talks to play the Baker.
If you said “Who?” then you’re not a Broadway queen. He was in The History Boys and won a Tony for One Man, Two Guvnors. He’s a riot, and could make a very convincing Baker.
But will they line up at the cineplex for this? Not my business.
