FORBIDDEN LOVE

by

Before Todd Haynes debuted the 2002 film Far From Heaven, a lush homage to the melodramas of Douglas Sirk, he considered several alternate titles: This Splendid Life, The Surface of Things, Fall From Splendor. Any of them might accurately describe the movie’s mélange of magnificent exterior settings and desperate interior lives. Now composer Scott Frankel and lyricist Michael Korie (who last teamed on Grey Gardens) have partnered with prolific playwright Richard Greenberg to transform this movie into a
Playwrights Horizons musical. The enchanting Kelli O’Hara plays a perfectly gowned and coiffed homemaker who must confront her husband’s homosexuality even as she realizes her own amorous longings for her African American gardener (Isaiah Johnson).

Tuesdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: May 14. Continues through June 30, 2013
