Devendra Banhart

by

Hirsute hippie Devendra Banhart has been the (accidental or otherwise) poster boy of New Weird America for years now, his homemade sound mixing Beatles-tinged psychadelia and whimsical lo-fi melodies with lyrics fit for a Salvador Dali therapy session. After a number of sprawling, genre-jumping albums, Banhart’s latest effort shows he’s perhaps a little more grown up but no less playful, leaning away from the “freak” part of “freak folk” in favor of immediate, nylon-stringed love songs written with humor and grace.
