Handsome Family

Custer haunts the local Wal-Mart, octopuses hypnotize fish, and a crone doses villagers with something strange and psychotropic on Brett and Rennie Sparks’s exquisitely weird new country gem, Wilderness. The Albuquerque couple’s 10th album is devoted to woodland and other creatures, including “The Woodpecker,” “The Spider,” and “The Shark.” Local appeal: “When Stephen Foster died in a flophouse on the Bowery / his worn-out wallet held just a quarter and a dime,” sings Brett in “Wildebeest.”
