As the sun set near the Boat Basin Café, Beyoncé thumped from the speakers at the Saveur Summer BBQ, part of a mix “created by the chefs themselves–so as you eat, you’ll be listening to the music they normally cook to,” according to one of the party’s representatives.
The venue was partially closed off for the party where 18 chefs from across the country–many of whom call New York City home–gathered to show off their grilling skills.
Tables were manned by heavy hitters like Lorena Garcia, Aldea’s George Mendes, and Top Chef competitors like Tiffany Derry and Kristen Kish. A few dishes stood out: Chef Tadashi Ono of the forthcoming Maison O served a grilled whole squid with ginger and soy, a contrast to the many beef dishes of the night and a very summery, light meal. Chef Michael Lomonaco of Porter House New York grilled prime strip steak and served it with bourbon potted chili onions on potato buns, differentiated by its novelty. Our favorite dish of the night, though, was the grilled lamb belly with Roman-style artichokes and purple artichoke honey from chef Sarah Grueneberg of Chicago’s Spiaggia. We went back for seconds.
As darkness descended, the setting became more like a club, and the young crowd snapped up glow sticks that were being handed out. We headed to Ai Fiori chef Robert Tuitt’s table, where we found strawberry ice cream sandwiches, a harbinger that summer had really arrived in New York City.
