Saro Bistro’s Satarash, One of Our 100 Favorite Dishes

Later this year, we’ll pen our Best of NYC issue, our annual love letter to what’s great in this town. When that paper hits the streets, you’ll find our picks for the very best this city has to offer when it comes to dozens of cuisines, restaurants, dishes, and drinks. Until then, you can get a taste of our contenders as we count down, in no particular order, our 100 favorite dishes from around the boroughs, a list of laudable eats worth tracking down right now.

No. 81: Satarash from Saro Bistro

It’s difficult to find decent brunch spots that aren’t totally overrun by packs of people looking to undo the effects of the night before, which makes Balkan restaurant Saro Bistro a pleasant weekend respite, particularly if you can nab a seat on the small, shady front patio (and you likely can). After you settle in with French press coffee, order the satarash, a light, vibrant, and summery stew of sweet, earthy bell peppers deepened by onions and topped with a pair of eggs that spill yolk over the vegetables, adding rich heft. Pinball-sized corn fritters that come on the side go a long way in adding a crunchy texture and sopping up some of the extra juice; you’ll likely want a slice of spongy white bread to catch any last remaining drops.
