Having scared the kids with Shockheaded Peter and collaborated with the Kronos Quartet on material inspired by Edward Gorey, cabaret-noir trio Tiger Lillies sail into Celebrate Brooklyn! with a stunning take on The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic tale of scapegoating and avicide. Martin Jacques’s high haranguing voice and mournful accordion add notes of Brechtian moralism alongside drummer Adrian Huge and bassist Adrian Stout. Mark Holthhusen designed the double-screen video animations that provide a woozy, almost three-dimensional cornucopia of maritime imagery. At one point the Lillies appear to be immersed in a spectral seabed; at another, they could be playing live from Hell. Singer-accordionist Cynthia Hopkins opens the evening with her own set of ghost stories and sea shanties.
