Cheap Laughs: The Best in Independent and Alternative Comedy This Week – 7/22/2013

The dog days of summer are here. And admit it: you can’t stand the thought of another outdoor concert, where you pretend to enjoy three art school dropouts indulge their irony-free love of noodling. Change it up, save your money, and go see some comedy in some of New York’s finest air-conditioned venues. Here is our pick of the week’s best gigs.

Monday, July 22nd

The Broken Comedy Show

Bar Matchless, free.
Hosts Michale Che, Mike Denny and Nimesh Patel serve up a relaxed, good-natured standup show each week in Greenpoint. This week, Janelle James, Kevin Barnett, Josh Rabinowitz and Andrew Short make up a solid bill.

Tuesday, July 23rd

The Big Shrink – A Comedy Variety Show

UCB East, $5.
A deep-dish pie of storytelling, sketch, standup and musical comedy graces the UCBEast stage, with a deeply funny lineup this week. Rob Lathan, Cody Linquist, Michelle Wolf, Sheng Wang and Jessica Delfino will give you way more than your money’s worth.

Wednesday, July 24th

The Creek and the Cave, free.
Social sharing site Reddit claims to be “The Front Page of the Internet” (and probably is), and continues to dip its toe into producing awesome standup shows for its obsessive community. Hosts Nathan Anderson and Adam Lash bring out the best comics active on the site’s r/standup subreddit (think of it like a message board that doesn’t suck). Tonight, vegan nerd king Myq Kaplan headlines.

Thursday, July 25th

Bust Magazine 20th Anniversary Party
The Bell House, $35.
Cheap isn’t about dollars, it’s about value, and $35 is cheap for a night out this great. SNL’s Vanessa Bayer, comedy duo Broad City (who are making a pilot with Amy Poehler) and standup Jessi Klein round-out the comedy portion of the night, with drag king Murray Hill, pop impresario Har Mar Superstar, and oddball Japanese tape-loop legends Cibo Matto rounding out a thoroughly weird and satisfying New York evening.

Friday, July 26th

Jim Tews
The Creek and the Cave, free.
This Cleveland native is your best bet for a local laugh this weekend. Skip the Manhattan crowds and let a true comic pro give you a great night out for the best price: nothing.

Tom Cowell is a comedian.
