Like ’70s and ’80s country star Crystal Gayle, Iris DeMent is the youngest of eight children. But where Gayle crossed over into the pop charts—We Must Believe in Magic was the genre’s first platinum album by a female singer—DeMent sticks to her roots, singing arresting folk and gospel tunes that would have sounded vintage well before even Gayle’s time. Last year, her piano-based Sing the Delta (its title referring to the Arkansas Delta where she spent her early years), her first collection of original songs in 16 years, came from nowhere to place third in the Nashville Scene’s annual poll of country critics.
