We don’t necessarily go out of our way to make Radegast, the German beer hall in Williamsburg, a culinary destination; we’re much more likely to find ourselves there when we’re craving a liter (or three) of Dunkel, a rowdy-ish night, and a little live entertainment. But because we’re loath to miss an opportunity to cram food into our maws–especially when drinking–we’ve discovered that in addition to a decent enough menu of schnitzel, spaetzle, and sausage, this spot serves one hell of a pretzel that’s worth ordering alongside your Kölsch. The massive braid is slightly sweet and yeasty, the soft, airy center encased in a crisp, brown exterior brushed with oil and coated thoroughly with crackly salt. Served hot, it really needs no dipping sauce. If you’re a fan of dunking, though, you might want to head back the grill and create your own sampler of mustards, since the version that comes on the side is sweet, spicy, and mediocre.
