Don’t Hassel the Hoff, the old wisdom goes. A 36-year-old Shelton, Connecticut convenience store clerk, heeding the warnings of our forebears, tried to stop a man from stealing signs with images of David Hasselhoff off of a pole and was seriously injured in the process.
The Cumberland Farms clerk saw a man loading the signs–which advertised the sale of Cumberland Farms’ “Iced Hoffee”–into an SUV, but was then struck and dragged by the getaway vehicle.
Police are still searching for the car, but a 19-year-old man has admitted to being the driver. No arrests have been made yet.
Hasselhoff released a statement expressing sadness and support for the would-be hero, who is still in the hospital in critical condition.
The Iced Hoffee signs have become something of a collector’s item among people who think that sort of thing is funny. Over 550 of the signs have been stolen since the ad campaign began a year ago.
